CARY, N.C. — The comeback effort from junior Sophia Webster fell just short on Monday as she was defeated in the opening round of singles qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships from Cary Tennis Park.
After putting together three straight wins in prequalifying, Webster drew No. 115 ranked Audrey Spencer of Ohio State to begin qualifying play. Both players battled to a tiebreak in the opening frame, but it was Spencer who claimed the set advantage, 7-6 (6), to start the match. Webster responded in the second 6-3, sending the contest to a third set. But after jumping out to a 4-2 lead in the final set, Webster was unable to close the door on Spencer, who ultimately claimed the third frame 6-4 to advance.
Webster will have a final singles consolation match at All-Americans tomorrow before shifting her focus to doubles play for the main draw on Wednesday.
