TULSA, Okla. — Vanderbilt men's tennis suffered its first losses of the ITA All-American Championships hosted by Tulsa, falling in two singles contests during the opening round of qualifying on Monday.
Sophomore Hoyoung Roh took the court for the first time this fall after earning a starting spot in the qualifying draw. He began the day against Oklahoma's Asahi Harazaki on Court 9. After a slow start saw his Sooner counterpart take the initial set, Hoyoung stormed back in the second, blanking Harazaki 6-0 to even the match at one set apiece. Both players were inseperable in the third frame, which eventually went to a tiebreaker to decide the result. But it was Harazaki who rallied late to secure the match win, 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (6).
The day was not yet done for the Dores as senior Hugo Coquelin followed with a matchup against Jules Leroux of NC State. Coquelin entered the contest having won three in a row, all of which had come in straight sets. Monday's match looked to be trending that direction after Coquelin snatched an early lead 6-4. Leroux, however, responded in the second and third sets to finish off the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Vanderbilt's tournament is not yet over as Hoyoung will have a consolation match tomorrow before joining Pablo Martinez Gomez in the doubles main draw on Wednesday. Martinez Gomez will also be competing in the singles main draw. Live streaming of the ITA All-American Championships will be available online.
