Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt went 3-1 on the week and claimed two of three in a top-10 matchup with No. 6 South Carolina at Hawkins Field over the weekend. The Commodores stayed atop the SEC East standings with the series win. Vanderbilt bounced back after dropping Game 1 to the Gamecocks with wins on Saturday and Sunday.
The week started with a seven-inning, run-rule win over North Alabama. Enrique Bradfield Jr. scored four times and Parker Noland went 4-for-4 at the dish. Davis Diaz and Jonathan Vastine each drove in four runs. South Carolina took Friday’s opener 14-6 abut the Vandy pitching staff kept the Gamecock offense in check in the final two games. Vanderbilt rallied from a 4-0 deficit Saturday to win 8-5 as Patrick Reilly shutdown the South Carolina bats in the middle innings. Reilly struck out six over four scoreless frames. South Carolina took an early lead Sunday as well, but Devin Futrell settled in and went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs while striking out seven. Ryan Ginther came on in relief and finished off the Gamecocks with 3.2 strong innings. Bradfield finished the week with a hit, run and walk in all four contests. He also stole three bases. The junior is one base knock away from 200 career hits.
Vanderbilt hosts Indiana State at 6 p.m. Tuesday before heading east to Knoxville for three games at Tennessee. Game 1 will be on SEC Network and Games 2 and 3 will air on ESPN2.
