Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt extended its win streak to 11 games with a midweek win over Lipscomb and a three-game sweep over Georgia at Hawkins Field. The Commodores are off to the best start to conference play in program history and are just the second SEC team since 1994 to begin conference action with three consecutive sweeps. Vanderbilt run-ruled Lipscomb 11-1 in eight innings Tuesday. Davis Diaz had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Alan Espinal hit a two-run homer in the win. Greysen Carter allowed one run over five innings to earn the win. Vandy started off strong in the series with Georgia, defeating the Bulldogs 9-2 in Game 1 on Friday. Carter Holton went seven innings and struck out a season-high 10 batters while allowing two runs on three hits. RJ Austin and RJ Schreck each had three-RBI games. Vanderbilt went in front 8-2 on Saturday but Georgia fought back to tie the game at 8-8 in the sixth. Vanderbilt responded with eight runs over the final three frames to win 16-8. Chris Maldonado tallied three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three. The Commodores finished off the sweep with a 4-0 win Sunday as Devin Futrell tossed eight shutout innings. Futrell didn’t allow a walk and held Georgia to three hits while striking out seven.
Maldonado was named Co-Freshman of the week after reaching base eight times in the series. Futrell was named Pitcher of the Week.
