Game Notes: Wake Forest WeekGame Notes: Wake Forest Week

 • Vanderbilt is set to welcome Wake Forest on Saturday after picking up its second win of the campaign in the home opener against Elon. The Commodores earned a 42-31 victory over the Phoenix to move to 2-0 on the season. Vandy last began a season 2-0 in 2018.

• This week’s matchup pits head coach Clark Lea against one of his former schools. Lea served as the linebackers coach for Wake Forest during the 2016 season as a part of Dave Clawson’s staff.

• Junior quarterback Mike Wright accounted for a program-record six touchdowns in the win over Elon — four passing and two rushing. He became the first-ever Vanderbilt quarterback to account for six scores in a single game.

• Freshman wideout Jayden McGowan turned in his first career 100-yard receiving game against Elon. McGowan finished the contest with four catches for 116 yards and a touchdown, and was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.

• Senior running back Ray Davis had a career day against the Phoenix. He rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries, both of which are tops for his time at Vanderbilt.

• The Commodore defense forced its third turnover of the season with a fumble recovery against Elon. With three fumble recoveries this season, Vandy has already matched its total of fumble recoveries from 2021.

• The Vandy offense is averaging 52.5 points per game entering the week. The Dores have scored 42 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2005.

• The Commodores’ 63 points in the season opener at Hawaii marked the most for the program since Vanderbilt defeated Davidson, 63-8, in 1969. The 53-point win was the program’s largest since a 58-0 win over Presbyterian on Sept. 17, 2012.

• The Dores picked up a pair of defensive touchdowns against the Rainbow Warriors returning two fumbles for scores. It marked the first time that Vanderbilt has had multiple defensive scores since the Commodore defense scored twice against LSU on Sept. 21, 2019.

• Vanderbilt chose eight team captains for the 2022 campaign: Ethan Barr, Ben Bresnahan, Daevion Davis, Jaylen Mahoney, Elijah McAllister, Anfernee Orji, Gavin Schoenwald and Mike Wright.
