NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt baseball student-athlete Chris McElvain was named SEC Pitcher of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
McElvain helped lead the Commodores to a combined no-hitter in Friday’s series opener at Kentucky. The junior right-hander worked 7.0 shutout innings to pick up his fifth win on the year. He struck out nine batters on the night, which marked the most in his career in an SEC game.
McElvain combined with Christian Little for the no-hitter, which marked the first combined no-hitter for Vanderbilt since four pitchers (Jensen Lewis, Nick Pilkington, John Scott and Matt Buschmann) accomplished the feat on May 6, 2003, at Western Kentucky.
McElvain becomes the fourth Commodore this season to earn weekly conference recognition. He joins the trio of Davis Diaz, Carter Holton and Tate Kolwyck.
Vanderbilt will take the midweek off before returning to action on Thursday. The Commodores will welcome Texas A&M to Hawkins Field for a three-game series. Thursday’s series opener is set for 7 p.m., with action airing live on ESPNU.
