Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt split its four games last week, defeated Austin Peay on Tuesday at home and going 1-2 in the three-game series at Auburn over the weekend. The Commodores won 12-2 vs. the Governors to record their 27th consecutive midweek victory at home. Vandy jumped out to an early lead, scoring 11 of its 12 runs across the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to gain control. Vanderbilt received another strong performance from freshman left-hander Devin Futrell, who picked up his team-leading sixth win on the year. Futrell allowed two earned runs over his 5.2 innings of work, while striking out a career-high 10 batters. The Vanderbilt offense was paced by the duo of Dominic Keegan and Calvin Hewett, who each contributed three-hit efforts. Hewett added a team-high three runs scored, while Rob Gordon led the team in RBI with three. Vandy fell 5-1 at Auburn on Friday but responded with an impressive 19-4 victory on Saturday. The Vanderbilt offense registered a season-high 23 hits, with 14 of those going for extra bases. Spencer Jones went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Keegan posted a 4-for-5 outing with three RBI, as well. Jack Bulger registered Vandy’s first five-hit game of the season with a perfect 5-for-5 with two RBI. Vandy fell 8-2 on Sunday as Auburn claimed the series.
