LOS CABOS, Mexico —Vanderbilt rallied from a slow start Sunday and finished its opening round of the Cabo Collegiate with a 3-under-par 281.
Vandy, which at one point had dropped to the bottom of the leaderboard in the 15-team field, wound up with 21 birdies and got a sizzling round from Gordon Sargent.
A freshman, Sargent is tied for second after 18 holes. He carded an eagle on the par-5 second and is 5-under-par and is one stroke back of leader Brian Stark of Oklahoma State.
“Extremely proud of the boys and how they battled in to finish strong today,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “That’s how you build some trust in each other is battling like that all the way to the finish. It just shows how much you care.”
Vandy also got under-par rounds from Cole Sherwood (-1) and Jackson Van Paris (-1) are both tied for 29th overall. Reid Davenport (+4) is tied for 63rd and Matthew Riedel (+5) is tied for 67th.
Oklahoma State leads the tournament after a 13-under-par round Sunday and is one shot ahead of Florida State.
“Obviously, Gordon’s finish was huge for our team on a day when we really needed someone to step up,” Limbaugh said. “Also, Jackson and Cole both did a good job hanging in there and finishing strong. Reid and Matthew didn’t have their best stuff today, but we believe in them and I know they will respond.”
The Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m. CT Monday alongside Stanford and Texas Tech.

“We got punched a little bit early today then had to respond and we did which was great,” Limbaugh said. “However, we need to be ready to roll from the start Monday and compete to our standards and continue to have some fun. Monday is an important day and we need to embrace that.”
