NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s Mabel Cummins and Paige Peters are the Southland Bowling League Bowler and Newcomer of the Month, respectively, the league announced Thursday.

Cummins led the Commodores to three championship brackets at three major events in January. The Tennessean finished in the top eight at all three events, making the All-tournament team in each event. Cummins led the team in the month of January recording 232 strikes, a 21.108 average over 916 frames.

Despite having a thumb issue that kept her out of a few matches in Las Vegas, Peters managed to average 208 for the month in 84 percent of the frames possible. The freshman took home MVP honors at the Northeast Classic en route to a team victory.

From Toms River, New Jersey, Peters helped lead Vanderbilt to a 23-15 record and a first-place finish at the Northeast Classic. Cummins, Peters and the rest of the Commodores return to the lanes Feb. 11-13 at the Lady Techsters Classic in Dallas, Texas.

Southland Bowlers of the Month are voted upon by the league’s sports information directors and coaches. Voting for one’s own bowler is not permitted.
