Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt posted a 2-2 record on the week. The Commodores began the week with a 5-4 midweek win over UT-Martin, marking the team’s 23rd consecutive win in the midweek – a streak that dates to March 2019. Tuesday’s matchup was a back-and-forth outing, before Vandy pulled away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain a lead it would not relinquish. The weekend saw Vanderbilt drop its first weekend series of the season, as the team welcomed the Georgia Bulldogs to town. Georgia claimed a loud 14-2 win over the Commodores in Thursday’s series opener, behind a seven-homer performance. The seven home runs marked the most allowed by Vanderbilt since the Commodores allowed five at Auburn on March 27, 2009. Thursday’s loss ended a nine-game winning streak for Vanderbilt. The Dores bounced back on Friday night, using a late eighth-inning rally to pull away from the Bulldogs. Vanderbilt scored four runs in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie and claim a 5-2 win to even the series. Commodore starter Jack Leiter went 7.0 innings of one-run baseball, while picking up 13 strikeouts in the effort. Nick Maldonado picked up his first career win with one inning of relief, before Luke Murphy worked the ninth to secure the victory. The Commodores fell in the series finale on Saturday, as Georgia used early offense to cruise to a 9-1 victory. The loss marked Vanderbilt first SEC series loss at home since the Commodores dropped the series to South Carolina on April 27-29, 2018.
