NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt student-athlete duo of Jayson Gonzalez and Carter Young both received SEC weekly honors, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Gonzalez was named SEC Player of the Week, while Young was tabbed the SEC Newcomer of the Week.
Gonzalez batted a team-high .667 (8-for-12) across Vanderbilt’s four games on the week, helping the team to a perfect 4-0 record. The senior infielder slugged a team-high 1.250, with four of his eight hits going for extra bases.
Gonzalez recorded at least one hit in each of the contests on the week, including multiple hits in three of the four. He drew five walks to notch a team-high .765 on-base percentage, while scoring seven runs across the four games to rank second on the team.
Young posted multi-hit outings in each of the Commodores’ four games, while recording a home run in three of the four matchups. He registered a team-high 10 RBI, including seven in the weekend series at LSU. He slugged 1.000 on the week, as five of his eight hits went for extra bases.
A switch-hitter, Young hit homers from both sides of the plate across the week – two from the right side and one on the left. He scored a run in each game on the week, while notching multi-RBI efforts in three games.
The Selah, Washington has reached base in every game this season, and owns a 28-game reached-base streak dating back to 2020.
This week marks fourth consecutive week that Vanderbilt has had a student-athlete receive a conference weekly honor. Gonzalez and Young join the trio of Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker and Dominic Keegan as the Commodore honorees. Leiter was named SEC Pitcher of the Week across the last two weeks, while Rocker earned Pitcher of the Week recognition on March 15 and Keegan was named SEC Co-Player of the Week on March 1.
