Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt went 3-1 across the week. The Commodores began the week with a midweek matchup against in-state foe Memphis, claiming a 10-4 win over the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at Hawkins Field. The contest concluded an 11-game homestand for the Commodores, as the team traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for its first road matchup of the season. After Friday’s series opener was postponed due to severe weather in the area, the two teams took the field for a Saturday doubleheader, marking Vanderbilt’s third doubleheader of the season. The Commodores took both games from the 13th-ranked Cowboys to claim the series, outscoring OSU 23-4 across the two games. Starter Kumar Rocker pitched a season-high 8.0 scoreless innings in Game 1, as Vanderbilt claimed a 5-0 win to notch its third shutout of the season. Rocker picked up his fourth win of the campaign, moving to 4-0, while the Commodore arms held OSU to a season-low two hits in the matchup. Vanderbilt exploded for 18 runs in the Game 2 of the twinbill, defeating Oklahoma State 18-4 to secure the series win. The Commodores registered three home runs, including a grand slam from junior Tate Kolwyck in the fourth inning to break things open. Starter Jack Leiter picked up the win, moving to 4-0 on the season. Leiter worked 5.0 scoreless innings, surrendering two hits while striking out seven. Vanderbilt dropped the series finale with the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon, 10-6. The Commodores fell to an early 8-0 deficit, before batting back to trim the margin to three. Vanderbilt scored five runs across the seventh and eighth innings, but could not complete the comeback. The series victory over the No. 13 Cowboys marked Vanderbilt’s first series victory on the road against a ranked opponent since March 16-18, 2018, when the Commodores swept then-No. 19 Mississippi State. Sunday’s lost snapped a nine-game winning streak for Vanderbilt, which was the longest streak since the Commodores won 12 in a row from May 12-June 2, 2019.
