Once, Twice, Three Times Against Georgia

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis will compete in its fifth straight NCAA quarterfinals on Friday at 4 p.m. CT while facing top-seeded Georgia at the USTA Tennis Complex in Orlando, Florida.

The Elite Eight matchup will be televised live on the Tennis Channel. This season marks the first year that the Tennis Channel will be covering the NCAA Championships. The channel will feature more the 50 hours of live matches throughout both the men and women’s NCAA quarterfinals.

“We’re very excited to be playing top-seed Georgia. They have had an incredible year. We’re thrilled to be in the Elite Eight taking on a team we have the utmost respect for. We are looking forward to a real battle on Friday,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald.

Friday’s matchup between the top-ranked Bulldogs and No. 8 Commodores will mark the third meeting between the two teams this season.

In the last meeting, Georgia defeated Vanderbilt, 4-1, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to close out the Commodores’ regular season.

In their first matchup, Vanderbilt battled against Georgia in the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February. The Bulldogs outlasted the Dores to earn a 4-3 victory, later advancing to claim the tournament title.

The Bulldogs currently lead the SEC as the No. 1 team after claiming the SEC regular season title. The Commodores check in as the No. 3 team in the conference boasting a 10-3 conference record.

The Bulldogs locked in their spot in their second straight NCAA Elite Eight after a 4-2 victory over Michigan in the NCAA Super Regionals. Georgia features five players in the top-125 Oracle ITA singles rankings led by No. 2 Katarina Jokic.

After blanking Texas A&M, 4-0, the Commodores enter Friday’s match starring five top-125 players led by Fernanda Contreras ranked as the No. 6 player in the nation.

No. 18 Christina Rosca will enter the Elite Eight match as a 2019 All-American after moving up two spots in the NCAA Individual Championship seeding after two withdraws.

In doubles, the Commodores are led by No. 38 Commodore duo Emily Smith and Emma Kurtz currently sporting a 7-6 overall record, earning five conference victories.

The winner of Friday’s match will advance to the NCAA Final Four and will face the winner of Friday’s matchup between No. 4 seeded Duke and No. 5 seeded South Carolina.
