FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores’ men’s golf team carded a two-round score of 572 (291-281) in the first two rounds of the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club and are in third place on the team leader board after 36 holes of play on Friday. The Commodores trail first-place Liberty by five shots and second-place Alabama by three after the first day of competition in Franklin, Tenn. Sophomore John Augenstein is tied atop the individual leader board with Davis Shore of Alabama with a two-round, three-under par, 139.
Augenstein led the Vanderbilt effort with his three-under, 139, on Friday, which came in warm and gusty conditions at the Legends Club. Augenstein led the field in par-five scoring in the first 36 holes with a nine-under par total, which included three eagles. Senior Theo Humphrey, who is sixth on the individual leader board with an even-par, 142, finished with a five-under total on the par-fives and posted two eagles on the day, which tied for second among all players. Vanderbilt’s other individual scores on Friday included a 148 (77-71) from junior Patrick Martin (T-21), a 151 (73-78) from junior Will Gordon (T-38), and a 152 (79-73) from redshirt freshman Mason Greenberg.
“First of all, I’m really thankful to all our volunteers and support staff that worked so tirelessly to help us get through a long day of golf,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought everything went really well and there were a lot of people that had a hand in that.
“It was a really good test of golf today here with the wind and the firmness of the course,” Limbaugh continued. “I was very pleased in how the guys hung in there in both rounds and finished both rounds pretty strong. This afternoon John played his last six holes in five-under par which was huge for us. Patrick played his final eight holes three-under and really looked solid coming in which I think was a good step for him. In the first round, Theo played really well after a tough start and helped the team grab the lead after the first round. I told the guys tonight that when things get hard like they did today, it just makes you better. We didn’t do everything to our standards today and the guys are aware of that, but we did compete and fight all the way through. We have to eliminate some of these big numbers which usually come from not focusing on the right things.”
Liberty holds the team lead after 36 holes with a team total of 570 (291-279) after posting a tournament-low team total of 279 in the second round.
The Commodores’ “B” team finished in a tie for 11th with a 603 total (302-301) with freshman Harrison Ott leading the way with a 148 total (74-74). Senior Michael Decker was next with a score of 150 (74-76).
“I love the character of this team and the leadership,” said Limbaugh. “We need to be better tomorrow than we were today and try to take another step towards being the team we want to be.
