Vanderbilt heads to MTSU for first road challenge of the season

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team will make a short trip to take on Middle Tennessee State at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday night in Murfreesboro. Fans can listen in or follow live statistics.
 
STARTING FIVE

  1. Vanderbilt dropped its season opener to North Alabama on Tuesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
  2. Murfreesboro native, Brinae Alexander collected 11 points in her collegiate debut for the Commodores after earning the start.
  3. Sophomore Autumn Newby posted a career-high 30-point, 10-rebound effort on the night.
  4. Vanderbilt won the battle in the paint against the Lions, 44-to-42, and took advantage of 17 second chance points compared to UNA’s seven.
  5. North Alabama edged Vanderbilt from the field, shooting 42.9 percent compared to VU’s 41.4 percent.

 
YOUNG LEADERSHIP
Youth is served on this season’s Vanderbilt roster. Last season 10 of Vanderbilt’s 14 players were underclassmen. This season’s squad features just one senior in Bree Horrocks.
 
The Commodores welcome in a pair of high-caliber signees in freshmen Brinae Alexander and Jordyn Cambridge. Cambridge was ranked as a Top-23 prospect and No. 4 guard in her class by ESPNHoopGurlz. Alexander was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and named the No. 51 player in her class and No. 14 player in her position by ESPNHoopGurlz. ESPNW named Alexander the No. 33 best player in the nation and Prospect Nation called her the 59th best player.
 
AN UNLIKELY APPEARANCE
Freshman Jordyn Cambridge had not played in a game in nearly two years due to a knee injury, but she made an appearance in the squad’s season opener on Tuesday. The Nashville, Tenn. native collected five points, five rebounds and two steals in her collegiate debut.
 
A NOTEWORTHY NIGHT
Newby posted a career-high 30-point, 10-rebound effort in the squad’s season-opener. Her previous high was 16 points against Lipscomb last season. This was Newby’s second career double-double. Vanderbilt last recorded a player with 30 points on Nov. 24, 2017, when Rachel Bell scored 31 against Syracuse.
 
DOUBLE-DIGITS FOR HALL
Chelsie Hall collected 10 points in game one of her sophomore campaign, her 20th career game in double-digits.
 
SCOUTING REPORT

  • This is Middle Tennessee’s first contest of the season, but the squad dropped an exhibition game to Trevecca on Oct. 31.
  • Freshman Taylor Sutton led four players in double figures with 16.
  • The Blue Raiders finished last season with an 18-13 mark and a 10-6 finish in Conference USA play.
