Below are some of the other standout performances from the past week of women’s Division I soccer.
Team of the Week: October 15-21
GK Elaina LaMacchia, Wisconsin-Milwaukee – A freshman starter for the Horizon League champs, LaMacchia only had to make four saves across two games. But they were both wins and shutouts, as the Panthers won a pair of games by 1-0 margins, securing the regular season crown.
D Julia Ashley, North Carolina – The senior continues to lead North Carolina’s imperious defense, notching shutouts against Boston College and Miami last week. She logged the full 90 in both matches as the Tar Heels clinched the regular season ACC title.
D Meaghan Nally, Georgetown – Another week, more wins for the Hoyas. Nally back-stopped a pair of stout defensive efforts, while also chipping in assists in victories against Marquette and Butler.
D Carly Hoke, Arkansas – The defender helped keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Mississippi State, with Hoke going the full 110 minutes. She also played every minute of a 3-1 defeat of Auburn.
M Sydney Simmons, Duke – While Simmons didn’t show up on the score sheet, she played every minute in wins against Louisville and Boston College, helping the Blue Devils dictate the tempo and pace of each game.
M Grace Jackson, Vanderbilt – It was an SEC-clinching weekend for the Commodores, which won both of its games against Auburn and Kentucky to seal the regular season crown. Jackson netted a goal in both games, including the winner against the Tigers.
M Kerry Abello, Penn State – As the season’s progressed, Abello’s shown a knack for scoring goals at the right time. She added a pair in Sunday’s 2-0 win against Minnesota, which clinched an outright Big Ten title for the Nittany Lions.
M Jasmine Casarez, Radford – With two road wins, Radford secured the Big South regular season crown. Casarez scored three goals and chipped in an assist, including the winners over Presbyterian and UNC Asheville.
F Ashley Sanchez, UCLA – Sanchez is finding her form at just the right time for UCLA. Sanchez had three goals and two assists as the Bruins beat Oregon and Oregon State.
F Bunny Shaw, Tennessee – There’s no doubting Shaw’s importance to Tennessee’s hopes of a deep run in either the SEC or NCAA tournament. She has nine goals on the season in just eight games, limited due to World Cup qualifying tournaments with Jamaica. Of her nine goals, five have been game winners. Meanwhile, the Volunteers are 8-1 when she makes an appearance, as oppose to 4-1-2 without her.
F Penelope Hocking, USC – Also facing the Pac-12 sides from Oregon, Hocking bagged a hat trick in the win over Oregon, scoring five times in the two wins.
