Seven members of the Vanderbilt bowling program have begun play in the week-long Junior Gold Championship in Dallas.
Kelsey Abrahamsen, Samantha Gainor, Bryanna Leyen, Lauren Potechin and Adel Wahnerwere members of last season’s national championship team while incoming freshmen Angelique Dalesandro of Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Brogan Zengel of Centerville, Ohio are also on hand to participate in the largest and most prestigious junior bowling tournament in the nation.
The event has drawn nearly 1,000 boys and girls from across the country. There are three age categories being contested with the Commodore team members in the Under-20 group. The tournament requires no less than eight Dallas area bowling centers for the four days of qualifying before the field is cut Friday morning. The champions are crowned Saturday.
Vanderbilt coaches John Williamson and Josie Barnes have already been in Dallas for several days of coaches meetings and advance recruiting and will be scurrying from one center to another all week.
Former Commodores Brittni Hamilton (2010) and Robyn Renslow (2012) are past Junior Gold champions.
