WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –The season has come to a close for Cameron Klinger of the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, as the junior caps his season as a two-time All-American in the NCAA singles round of 16.
In his NCAA singles debut on Wednesday, the junior handed the tournament draw an upset as Klinger defeated 9-16th seeded Alex Knight of Michigan 6-4, 6-0 loss. Yesterday, Cam advanced into the round of 16 with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory over Virginia Tech’s 29th-ranked Mitch Harper.
The victory over Harper ensured Klinger’s second All-American honor, as student-athletes who content in the NCAA round of 16 earn the elite title.
26th-ranked Klinger’s toughest challenge came Friday afternoon against North Carolina’s second-seeded/No. 3 William Blumberg. Klinger fought hard throughout the first set, just falling short with the Tar Heel taking the 6-4 advantage.
Blumberg continued to play crafty tennis throughout the second set, sealing the victory and spot in the NCAA quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Klinger and the reminder of the Commodore contingent will play tennis tournaments intermittently throughout this summer in preparation for the 2018 fall season.
