Vanderbilt sophomore John Augenstein was named the SEC Co-Golfer of the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala after capturing his first collegiate title last weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship over the weekend. The honor is the first of his career and the second by a Commodore this season, joining senior Theo Humphrey, who won the honor for his win at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
Augenstein, a sophomore from Owensboro, Ky. and a Steve and Nicholas Zeppos Scholar, won his first collegiate event at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., over the weekend when he posted a seven-under par, 206 (70-69-67) to win the tournament by five shots. Augenstein is the third Commodore to win an individual championship, and his performance helped Vanderbilt to their fourth tournament win in their last five events. For the season, Augenstein has a 71.08 stroke average, one individual championship, three top five finishes, and five top 10’s. He also has the Commodores’ lowest round of the season, which came in the second round of the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links, when he posted a nine-under 63. Augenstein led the Mason Rudolph field in par-five scoring (4.17 average, -10), tied for the tournament lead in par-four scoring (4.04, +1), paced the field in birdies with 17, and posted a tournament-best three eagles.
Augenstein shared the award with Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss.
Augenstein and his Commodore teammates return to the course for the SEC Championship, which takes place April 25-29 at Sea Island Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga.
