Vanderbilt lacrosse begins a two-game road week in Philadelphia on Wednesday as the Dores battle BIG EAST rival Temple at 11 a.m. CT.
The Commodores (8-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) are locked in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings with the Owls (8-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) and UConn, which the Commodores will face on Sunday. The Dores, Owls and Huskies each sit one game out of postseason position and a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament.
VU is coming off a 15-9 home loss on Saturday to Georgetown, in which senior attacker Kayla Peterson became the Commodores’ first 50-goal scorer in a single season since 2009 and the fourth player to accomplish the feat in school history. Peterson scored four goals against the Hoyas to run her season total to 51 goals, inching closer to Sarah Downing’s program record of 55 goals set in 2009.
Sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson returns to her hometown of Philadelphia just seven points away from her 100th career point. The Garnet Valley High School product has 16 points in three collegiate games in Philadelphia.

Series History
This is the fifth meeting in lacrosse between Vanderbilt and Temple, with the Owls leading the series 3-1. Vanderbilt is 0-2 vs. Temple in Philadelphia. The Owls won last year’s meeting 11-10 in Nashville on April 15, 2017. Julie Blaze and Kayla Pruitt each scored twice for the Dores in the home loss.

Temple and Vanderbilt enter Wednesday’s matchup with identical overall records of 8-6 and matching BIG EAST records of 3-3. The two teams also have matching results across six common opponents, with both the Commodores and the Owls boasting wins over Butler, Cincinnati and La Salle, along with losses to Marquette, Florida, and St. Joseph’s.
Reaching the Century Mark
Senior attacker Kayla Peterson scored her 100th collegiate goal on April 8 at Marquette, and is now 12th in Vanderbilt history with 104 goals. Peterson is Vanderbilt’s first 50-goal scorer in a single season since Sarah Downing in 2009, and is four goals away from tying Downing’s program-record 55 goals in 2009. Peterson scored her 100th collegiate point at Butler on March 25.

Philly, Philly!
Sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson will play her fourth collegiate game in her hometown of Philadelphia on Wednesday, and has put up big numbers in her first three homecomings with the Commodores. Mathewson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for Week 5 on March 13 after scoring eight goals in two games in her hometown of Philadelphia. The Garnet Valley High School product posted a pair of four-goal games against La Salle and St. Joseph’s, including the game-winning goal in overtime vs. the Explorers on March 8. In three collegiate games in Philadelphia, Mathewson has now scored 13 goals and 16 points, dating back to her five-goal, three-assist performance in a 14-12 win over Villanova on March 18, 2017, which earned her BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors. Mathewson is seven points away from her 100th collegiate point, and is tied for the most points in a single season at Vanderbilt since 2010.

Vanderbilt’s offense is 12th nationally with 34.07 shots per game and 25.36 shots on goal per game. Vanderbilt is also 20th nationally and second in the BIG EAST with 14.64 goals per game.

Individual Milestones
Vanderbilt senior attacker Kayla Peterson scored her 100th collegiate goal on April 8 against Marquette and her 100th career point in the win over Butler on March 25. The senior from Hagerstown, Md. has scored 104 goals along with 17 assists in her career for a total of 121 points, and is the 13th player in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Peterson is now eighth in program history with 94 draw controls, and is 11 draws away from tying former teammate Kelly Chandler for seventh place. Sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson scored her 50th career goal vs. Oregon on March 28, and junior midfielder Melanie Becker scored her 50th career point at Butler on March 25.
