Vanderbilt lacrosse returns home for a BIG EAST battle Saturday afternoon on Senior Day when No. 23/RV Georgetown visits for a matchup of two of the conference’s top five teams.
The Commodores (8-5, 3-2 BIG EAST) can pull back into postseason position with a win over the Hoyas (8-4, 4-1 BIG EAST). A victory would vault Vanderbilt into fourth place in the BIG EAST with three regular season games remaining.
Vandy will honor its nine seniors before the game, with Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 12:40 p.m. Frankie Angeleri, Mary Claire Dachille, Jess Dadino, Margaret Fee, Kayla Peterson, Leah Peterson, Lexi Smith, Kayla Pruitt and Marley Sternberg will be recognized for their contributions to the program.
The 2018 senior class has combined to score 124 goals and dish out 39 assists for the Commodores, equaling a total of 163 points. The nine student-athletes have combined for 23 spots on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and six BIG EAST weekly awards.
The class’ leading scorer, attacker Kayla Peterson, became the 13th player in Vanderbilt history to score 100 collegiate goals last Sunday in a 13-11 loss at Marquette. She is now one goal away from tying Cara Giordano for 12th on the program’s all-time list with 101 goals, and is three goals away from becoming VU’s first 50-goal scorer in a single-season since 2009.
Seven different Commodores scored goals against Marquette, and sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson collected a personal-best five assists in the game.
Vanderbilt is looking to win its third straight home conference game. The Dores are 2-1 in BIG EAST home competition this season.
Opening draw between the Commodores and Hoyas is at 1 p.m. Saturday indoors at the VU Multipurpose Facility inside the Vanderbilt Rec Center near the 25th Avenue entrance, with Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 12:40 p.m. The first 300 students in attendance will receive a Comfort Colors Vanderbilt tank top.
Series History
Georgetown leads the all-time series, 9-0, including wins in all three meetings in Nashville. The Hoyas won last year’s meeting, 18-11, in D.C.
Hoya Laxa
Georgetown enters the weekend with an 8-4 overall record, and a 4-1 conference mark good for third place in the BIG EAST. Vanderbilt and Denver are tied for fourth with identical 3-2 BIG EAST records. The Hoyas have won three straight games, with consecutive conference wins over Cincinnati, Denver and Butler. Georgetown’s lone BIG EAST loss was a home match against Florida.
Reaching the Century Mark
Senior attacker Kayla Peterson scored her 100th collegiate goal Sunday at Marquette. Peterson is already Vanderbilt’s first 40-goal scorer in a single season since Carly Linthicum in 2013, and is three goals away from becoming the fourth 50-goal scorer in team history and the first since Sarah Downing scored a program-record 55 goals in 2009. Peterson scored her 100th collegiate point at Butler on March 25.

Vanderbilt’s offense is ninth nationally with 34.38 shots per game and seventh nationally with 25.85 shots on goal per game. Vanderbilt is also 15th nationally and second in the BIG EAST with 15.08 goals per game.

Vanderbilt leads the BIG EAST Conference in four major team categories (NCAA rankings in parentheses):

Individual Milestones
Vanderbilt senior attacker Kayla Peterson scored her 100th collegiate goal Sunday against Marquette and her 100th career point in the win over Butler on March 25. The senior from Hagerstown, Md. has scored 100 goals along with 17 assists in her career for a total of 117 points, and is the 13th player in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Peterson is now eighth in program history with 94 draw controls, and is 11 draws away from tying former teammate Kelly Chandler for seventh place. Sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson scored her 50th career goal vs. Oregon on March 28, and junior midfielder Melanie Becker scored her 50th career point at Butler on March 25.
