Dores stage high-energy practice in stadium Saturday

Aug. 19, 2017

On campus in Nashville — The Commodores capped the third week of camp with a high-tempo practice Saturday morning in Vanderbilt Stadium.

Head coach Derek Mason focused much of the session on conditioning, special teams, position fundamentals and team drills in the squad’s second stadium workout in three days.

Afterward, Mason was pleased with the team’s energy and intensity during the 75-minute workout, which came two weeks before the Commodores face Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro.

“We got a great deal of work done this morning,” Mason said. “I thought our energy level was very good and I saw guys making plans on both sides of the ball. There was a lot to like.”

Shurmur continues to sparkle

Quarterback Kyle Shurmur continued a solid camp, impressing in the team’s brief non-tackle 11-on-11 team drill.

In the span of seven plays, Shurmur connected twice with Trent Sherfield for first downs throws, hit C.J. Duncan for 15 yards over the middle, then located Sherfield on a deep fade route.

Fisher, Jordan, Light on the sidelines

All three members of the Vanderbilt Radio Network — announcer Joe Fisher, color analyst Norman Jordan and sideline reporter Mitch Light — watched the stadium practice from the sidelines.

This marks Fisher’s 20th season as Vanderbilt’s play-by-play announcer. Norman, a former Commodore running back, returns for his third year in the radio booth. Light, a Vanderbilt graduate and editor at Athlon Sports, is back for his fifth season providing commentary from the sidelines.

Powerful Nashville station WLAC AM-1510 serves as flagship of the Vanderbilt Radio Network. The Commodores can also be heard on a second Nashville station, 98.3 FM, and eight more stations across the state: WALV 105.1 FM in Chattanooga, WEKR AM-1240 in Fayetteville, WJJM AM-1490 in Lewisburg, WMSR AM-1320 and 107.9 FM in Manchester, WMPS AM-1210 and 103.1 FM in Memphis, and WDUC 93.9 FM in Tullahoma.
