Commodores scrimmage in stadium Thursday

Aug. 17, 2017

The Commodores worked for approximately 90 minutes inside Vanderbilt Stadium in the team’s third scrimmage of the fall with the offense leading the way early but the defense taking over late on Thursday morning.

The offense was in high gear right out of the gate with Kyle Shurmur hooking up with Trey Ellis for a critical third down conversion. Shurmur found Jared Pinkney three times on the drive before it stalled to force a field goal. Tommy Openshaw’s boot was good from 30 yards to get the offense on the board.

After the first 12-minute quarter, the defense began to turn the momentum. Ryan White broke up a Shurmur pass intended for Pinkney over the middle to force a punt later in the scrimmage. The defensive line knocked down multiple passes in the scrimmage with Nifae Lealao and Dare Odeyingbo knocking down passes.

Give and Take
Before the scrimmage, the Dores had a very competitive 7-on-7 session. Oren Burks picked off a Kyle Shurmur pass early in the drill before Shurmur answered with a beautiful pass to Jared Pinkney on a post pattern in the end zone.

Up Next
The Commodores have a light walk-thru practice scheduled for Friday afternoon before hitting the practice field in full pads on Saturday morning.
