Weather forced the Commodores inside the Multipurpose Facility on Monday afternoon for the Commodores’ 90-minute workout in shoulder pads and helmets.
The squad focused on individual work in the first half of the practice with each position taking time to work on skills. Later in the practice the team worked in a crossover period where different position groups squared off in drills with the offensive and defensive lines battling, linebackers and running backs working against each other and the quarterbacks and receivers taking on the Dores’ defensive backs.
In the first team drill of the day, Emmanuel Smith made a nice play breaking up a Kyle Shurmur pass intended for Jared Pinkney. Shurmur came right back, however, finding Kalija Lipscomb for a 20-yard score.

Inside the 25
The Vandy defense was impressive inside the 25-yard line during 7-on-7 work, locking down the passing game. The defense forced numerous check down throws from quarterbacks and knocked down passes. Back in team drills inside the 25-yard line, Shurmur quickly found CJ Duncan for a 20-yard TD. Moments later Jordan Griffin made a nice play from his linebacker spot, reading a screen pass perfectly and stopping the play in the backfield. On the next play, however, Josh Crawford got to the edge on the left side and bounced into the end zone for a 12-yard score. Deuce Wallace added a score on an 18-yard scamper on a QB keeper.
Team Time
In the final drill of the day, the team battled back-and-forth throughout the session. Jay Woods made his presence felt, knocking down a Shurmur pass at the line of scrimmage before Shurmur found Pinkney in the back of the end zone as the tight end went up and over a defender for the catch and score.
