Vanderbilt hit the practice field for their second day of preseason camp on Tuesday afternoon and the team brought their energy all day.

Head coach Derek Mason praised his team for their energy following the squad’s 90-minute workout. With music blaring for the speakers above the practice fields, the Commodores flew around during 7-on-7 drills early in practice during a red zone session and again at the end of the session. The defense locked down in the 7-on-7 session making numerous plays and breaking up passes. Kyle Shurmur, however, managed to find CJ Duncan for a score then placed a perfect pass to a diving Sam Dobbs down the middle for a score on the final play of the drill.

Full Backfield
The Commodores return the school’s all-time leading rusher in Ralph Webb but he’s not alone in the Vandy backfield. Khari Blasingame returns from a stellar 2016 campaign that saw him score 10 TDs along with senior Dallas Rivers, junior Josh Crawford and redshirt freshman Jamuari Wakefield. The group also added Illinois transfer and Nashville-native Ke’Shawn Vaughn to make it arguably one of the best backfields in recent Vanderbilt history.

Long on the outside
The difference in wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton’s position group is noticeable already just two days into camp. The Dores’ freshmen wide outs James Bostic (6-3) and Chris Pierce (6-4) stand out and above a crowd. Add in Ohio State transfer Alex Stump (6-3) and the Commodores now have eight pass catchers 6-3 or taller.

Numbers Game
Fans will need a roster on Saturday at the team’s annual Dore Jam (4-6 p.m. inside the Multipurpose Facility) to find a few of their favorite players. Emmanuel Smith (4), LaDarius Wiley (5) and Zaire Jones (6) have all changed numbers heading into the 2017 season.

Up Next
The Commodores return to the practice field tomorrow afternoon for the final day before putting the pads on for Thursday’s practice.
