DENVER, Colo. – The Vanderbilt Commodores have not had much time to dwell on their recent loss to Georgetown, as they are about to be back on the field again. BIG EAST play is in full swing and the Dores are set to face No. 13 Denver on Wednesday at 3 pm CT.

Head coach Cathy Swezey knows the team is looking forward to the challenge of playing another ranked opponent.

“Our team is really looking forward to playing another ranked opponent this week,” said Swezey. “We have worked really hard in practice to put the Georgetown game behind us and look forward to the challenge Denver will bring tomorrow. One of our goals this season is to make the BIG EAST Tournament and a win tomorrow would help us get closer to that goal.”

The Commodores and Pioneers are familiar foes as this will be their seventh meeting between the two squads. They have faced off in each of the last four seasons but this year the game has a little more at stake. The Pioneers joined the BIG EAST conference last summer and this will be the first meeting between the two teams as conference foes.

The all-time series is tied at 3-3 with the Commodores picking up the win last season. The Dores traveled out to Denver and defeated the Pioneers 12-7 on March 9. Jill Doherty scored twice and dished out two assists while Kayla Peterson came off the bench and had an assist and picked up two ground balls.

This season, the Dores have six players that have scored in double-digits. Kayla Peterson and Julie Blaze are tied for the team lead in goals with 26 apiece. Then Jill Doherty is third who has 24 goals on the year, followed by Emily Mathewson (16), Melanie Becker (13) and Caroline Peters (11). Doherty leads the team in draw controls (55), points (45), ground balls (22), assists (21) and caused turnovers (14). She has 82 assists in her career, which is just seven away from breaking the all-time mark at Vanderbilt that was set by Sarah Downing.

Defender Margaret Fee is second on the team in caused turnovers (12) and ground balls (17). In the cage, all three Commodore goalies have seen time this season. Callahan Kent has amassed a 4-3 record with 40 saves and 8.35 goals against average. Lily Argyle has a 1-1 record with 30 saves in seven games this season. Madison Foglio has a 1-1 record and made 15 saves in five appearances.

Denver enters Wednesday’s matchup ranked No. 13 in both polls with a 10-2 record overall and 4-1 in conference play. They are coming off an 18-12 victory over Marquette this past Saturday at home.

Elizabeth Behrins leads the Pioneers in goals with 34 and is second on the team in points with 41. Kendra Lanuza is the team leader in assists with 26 and points with 51. Ellie Knott is first on the team in draw controls with 76 while Layne Voorhees holds the team lead in ground balls (31) and caused turnovers (22).

The Pioneers have had three goaltenders see time in the cage this season with Maddy Stevenson leading the way. She has started all 12 games this season and has made 74 saves for a 8.71 goals against average, which is 11th best in the country.
