NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team looks to rebound from their tough loss to No. 16 Elon on Wednesday and they have that opportunity this weekend. The ‘Dores will look to finish their Carolina road trip with a win when they face Coastal Carolina Sunday at 12 pm CT.
Last time out against Elon, the Commodores surrendered the first three goals of the game and ended up chasing that deficit the entire evening.
The Phoenix scored three goals in the opening 6:09 of the game, forcing the ‘Dores to use a timeout.
Following the timeout, the Commodores and Phoenix would trade goals back-and-forth until halftime. The ‘Dores had two goals from Avery Hoelting, and one each from MacKenzie Lange and Emily Mathewson in the first half and faced a 7-4 deficit going into the break.
In the second half, the Commodores would hold the Phoenix without a goal for over 12 minutes to begin the half. Leading goal scorer Kayla Peterson would find the back of the net two minutes into the half to make it a two-score game.
Unfortunately for the ‘Dores, that would be the only goal they could muster and the Phoenix would eventually score at the 17:25 mark to make it 8-5. Elon would tally another goal to bring the lead to four goals with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game.
The ‘Dores would have one final run in them as they had goals from Melanie Becker and Caroline Peters just 33 seconds apart to bring the game to 9-7 with 11:50 left.
The Phoenix would answer with three straight goals to put the game away. The ‘Dore would get goals from Jill Doherty and Emily Mathewson to close the game and bring the final margin to 12-9.
Coastal Carolina is 3-0 heading into this Sunday’s matchup and is coming off a 13-8 win over Fresno State this past Wednesday. This will be the first ever matchup between the Commodores and Chanticleers.
Coastal has been able to score in bunches to begin its season. They have totaled 19, 11 and 13 goals in their first three games. Redshirt-senior Keri White leads the Chanticleers in goals with 10 on the season. Fellow senior Maggie Carr leads Coastal in assists with 10.
In the cage, the Chanticleers have seen action from Harley Barrett and Jenna Stover. Stover has started two games and made nine saves to earn a 1-0 record. Barrett started the other game for the Chanticleers, making 19 saves and has a 2-0 record of her own.
