Erin Whalen has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
It is the second time this season that the freshman from Charlotte, N.C., has won the award. She also took the honor on Dec. 6.
Whalen averaged 16.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game this past week. She scored 20 points — including the game-winning free throws with 2.5 seconds to play — in Vanderbilt’s win over Arkansas on Thursday, and followed that up with a 12-point effort in the regular-season finale against LSU on Sunday.
Whalen shot 57 percent from 3-point range for the week, going 8-of-14, including 4-of-4 against Arkansas. She has averaged 18.7 over the past three games, including a career-high 24 points last Sunday against Ole Miss.
The 6-foot-1 guard/forward is shooting 86 percent from the foul line and 41.7 percent from 3-point range for the season.
Whalen and the Commodores open play in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday, facing Alabama at 10 a.m. CT.
