CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team began the Miami Spring Invite going 6-1 in singles play against No. 13 Texas Tech and 1-2 in doubles versus No. 20 Kentucky.
All of Vanderbilt’s ranked singles players picked up victories with two of the three wins coming in three hard fought sets.
No. 2 Astra Sharma and No. 19 Sydney Campbell defeated ranked foes with Sharma taking down Texas Tech’s No. 26 Gabriela Talaba in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 battle. Campbell defeated the Red Raider’s No. 81 Felicity Maltby in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
The Commodores came out on top of two additional three-setters as freshman No. 28 Christina Rosca defeated TTU’s Sabrina Federici 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and senior Georgina Sellyn flipped the switch for a comeback victory over Texas Tech’s Alba Cortina-Pou, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(2).
Sophomore newcomer, Emily Smith came out on top against Katelyn Jackson, 6-2, 6-4, with Fernanda Contreras earning a 7-6(3), 6-2 win over Sarah Dvorak. Sophomore Payton Robinette and freshman Emma Kurtz both lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3, respectively.
In doubles play, the freshman duo of Kurtz and Rosca picked up the lone win of the day as the tandem powered past UK’s Mami Adachi and Morgan Chumney, 6-4. Sellyn and Sharma fell 6-3 to the Wildcat’s Aldila Sutjiadi and Akvile Parazinskaite, while Campbell and Smith lost 6-4 to Kentucky’s Lesedi Jacobs/Emily Fanning.
The ‘Dores will be back in action at 8 a.m. CT Saturday morning taking on Miami in doubles followed by Kentucky in singles.
