NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The ninth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team competes in one last individual tournament before beginning the 2017 team dual match season.

This weekend the Commodores compete in Miami’s annual Spring Invite. Alongside the 12th-ranked Hurricanes, Vandy student-athletes will compete against players from No. 13 Texas Tech and No. 20 Kentucky.

“We’ve had some really good practices and we always look for to this tournament,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “There’s going to be ferocious competition this weekend, you’ve got four teams competing that could all end up in the Top-10. It’ll be a great, intense, three-day period to get a lot of singles and double play in.”

“For the freshmen they know what’s coming their way, but we’ve always found this tournament to be a nice introduction to the ITA Kickoff Weekend and the dual match season.”

While the dual match season officially begins next week with the ITA Kickoff Weekend, the ‘Dores will have plenty of chances to gain match experience over the three-day tournament as 10 ranked singles player and five doubles teams comprise the weekend’s draw.

Having competed in ITA Regionals and the Commodores’ June Stewart Invitational, Vanderbilt and Kentucky have sparred throughout the fall. With the Wildcats taking regional singles and doubles titles, the ‘Dores will be looking to serve up a few victories for the black and gold.

Commodores in the Rankings:
Astra Sharma is currently ranked No. 2 in the country, the highest ranking of any Commodore, with senior Sydney Campbell and freshman Christina Rosca following at 19 and 28, respectively.
