CZECH REPUBLIC—Maria Bulanova had a dazzling second day and as a result bolted into first place at the European Champions Cup Thursday.
The Vanderbilt freshman representing her native Russia had an eight-game block of 1,897 – a 237.1 average that was 139 pins more than the day’s second best bowler, Sara Xuereb of Malta.
Bulanova, the defending champion at this elite adult’s championship, strung together games of 258-258-191-258-224-251-236-221. She is 107 pins ahead of second place Cajsa Wegner of Sweden in the combined, two-day standings with a 232.2 average.
The field will be trimmed to the top 16 bowlers. Friday will be an off day for the women and competition resumes Saturday and concludes Sunday.
