OLOMOUC CZECH REPUBLIC—Vanderbilt freshman Maria Bulanova is set to defend her European Championship, which begins Wednesday and concludes Sunday.

Bulanova was a youthful but dominating winner of this prestigious championship a year ago competing for the Russian Federation. The Moscow native averaged 243.75 for four games as she swept both of her opponents in the best-of-three format.

The event attracts the top male and female adult bowler from each European country. In the case of the women’s side, there are 36 countries represented this year.

Although just months into her freshman year at Vanderbilt, Bulanova is an accomplished international competitor. She became the youngest bowler to win a European bowling championship when she won the Russian Open at age 14 in 2013.

Bulanova was accompanied on the long trip by Vanderbilt assistant coach Josie Earnest. She will return to classes immediately after this championship concludes and will be among the Commodores traveling to Houston for the team’s opening tournament Nov. 4.
