NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team capped its annual June Stewart Invitational on Sunday afternoon with freshman Christina Rosca defeating sophomore Fernanda Contreras in three sets in the division one final.

In what was bound to be one of the craftiest matchups of the weekend, Rosca and Contreras used every shot in the book to test one another. Playing on court one of the Currey Tennis Center, Contreras earned the first set advantage, 6-3, but Rosca turned the match around with a pair of 6-4 sets to claim the victory.

Emily Smith took the only two-set singles win of the day, while Emma Kurtz and Summer Dvorak defeated SEC foes in three full sets.

Playing on court three, Smith downed a regional opponent in Middle Tennessee’s Horsfall, 6-4, 6-2. A native of Atlanta, Kurtz defeated Auburn’s Caroline Turner, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Summer Dvorak rallied back after dropping her first set to earn her first victory of the weekend. The sophomore from Laguna Beach, Calif. defeated Ole Miss’ Stevens, 6-7(5), 6-2, 1-0(3).

With a crisp fall breeze in the morning, Commodore fans also enjoyed doubles play as VU picked up three tandems victories. All three of Vanderbilt’s doubles wins came over SEC opponents.

Experimenting with pairings, Contreras and Smith downed Auburn’s Axon/Griffin, 8-4. Rosca and Kurtz also pulled out a competitive conference matchup, defeating Ole Miss’ Milkuskyte/Novakovic, 8-6. In their largest margin of win to date, Sydney Campbell and Summer Dvorak powered through their match against the Rebel’s Sanford/Stevens, 8-2.

Vandy will enjoy a break from tournament competition next weekend, as the squad gears up for ITA Regionals. This year’s Regional begins Oct. 21st and will be hosted by Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
