Rising senior Matthias Schwab clinched the Europeans’ win over the United States Sunday at the 2016 Arnold Cup with a 2 and 1 victory over Doug Ghim at the Fornby Golf Club in Fornby, England. The Europeans won the Ryder-Cup style competition, 18.5-11.5, and reclaimed the Arnold Cup trophy after the United States won the match-play event in 2015 at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois.

Schwab took the lead with birdie at the third in his final round, but a bogey on the next hole moved the match to all-square. Schwab took control of the match by winning three straight, including two straight birdies, starting at number eight. Ghim would battle back to cut the lead to 1-down, but Schwab clinched the Cup with a birdie at number 17.

For his exploits at the Palmer Cup, Schwab was selected by both teams to receive the Arnold Palmer Cup exemption into the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard. Players selected the individual from both teams that they think best represents the “Arnold Palmer Legacy,” that is, the values that Arnold Palmer exhibited through his life in golf. Kieran Oates, the Arnold Palmer Cup junior caddie for Schwab, will also be on the bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Fellow Commodore Will Gordon also played on Sunday for Team USA and dropped a hard-fought match to Robin Sciot-Siegrist of Europe, 1-up.

Vanderbilt was one of only two collegiate teams with two players that competed this weekend in England.

Rising sophomore Patrick Martin finished in a tie for second at the prestigious Northeast Amateur at the Wannamoisett Country Club in East Providence, R.I., finishing with a final total of five-under par, 271 (68-66-68-69), which was one shot back of tournament champion Fred Wedel.

Teammate Theo Humphrey finished in a tie for 16th with a final score of one-under par, 275 (71-67-68-69).
