Junior Matthias Schwab led the way for Vanderbilt with a second-round 68.

Vanderbilt, who was a combined six-over par at the turn of their second round, rallied on the back nine with all five players contributing. The Commodores tied for the third-lowest round of the day with their even-par 280, and are leading the 30 best teams in college golf going into the third round on Sunday.

“That was a Vanderbilt golf kind of day!” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I’m so proud of the resiliency this group continues to show each time out. It was not a great start to the round today and I think having all five guys in there really paid off for us. The guys stayed positive and that gave us the opportunity to finish strong. It was a total team effort today and that is what it will have to continue to be. Matthias played some awesome golf over the last 10 holes, as did the rest of the guys. Those aren’t easy finishing holes and we played them really well today.”

Schwab, who was two-over par in his first seven holes, rallied with four birdies in the rest of his round to card his 68. The Commodores counted Schwab’s 68, an even-par 70 from freshman Will Gordon, and a pair of one-over par 71’s from freshman Patrick Martin and senior Carson Jacobs. Sophomore Theo Humphrey finished with a three-over 73.

Schwab is the Commodores’ leader in the individual standings with a two-round total of 139 (71-68), which ties him for sixth. Humphrey has a 140 total (67-73) and is in a tie for 15th, while Gordon has a 142 (72-70), which ties him for 35th. Martin has a two-day score of 144 (73-71, T-53) and Jacobs is in the clubhouse with a two-round total of 151 (80-71).

Vanderbilt, who will play with USC and Arkansas on Sunday beginning at 8:28 Pacific Time, leads the Trojans by two shots and the Razorbacks by three.

Justin Suh of USC has the individual lead with a score of 135 (68-67), one shot better than Robby Shelton of Alabama and Nahum Mendoza III of San Diego State.

“We have to continue to have fun and stay positive,” said Limbaugh. “Our ability to stay focused on the right things, control our play boxes, and overcome adversity will be very important as the tournament continues.”
