Whirlwind for White

Stephanie White was introduced as head coach of the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team Wednesday, becoming the fifth head coach in program history.

White, who will continue through the summer as head coach of the WNBA Indiana Fever franchise, was introduced by Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos and Vanderbilt Director of Athletics David Williams II in front of a crowd of Commodore fans in Memorial Gym.

White, a former academic All-America and national Player of the Year who helped lead Purdue University to the 1999 NCAA championship, has served as the Fever head coach for 20 months. In her first year with Indiana, she guided the Fever to the WNBA finals.

“The opportunity to lead Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball program is an opportunity that I simply could not pass up. The combination of Vanderbilt’s culture, when achievement – both on and off the court –is so highly valued, together with the institution’s fan support, and a legacy of winning basketball to build on, us incredibly exciting to me,” White said.

Vanderbilt’s new head coach also introduced a former Commodore legend, Carolyn Peck, as her newest staff addition. Peck, a 2015 Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame recipient who guided Purdue to the 1999 national title, will serve as White’s associate coach with the Commodores.
