TAKING ON THE TIGERS
Vanderbilt welcomes Auburn back to Hawkins Field for the first time since 2012 when the Commodores took two-of-three from the Tigers. Since their last meeting in Nashville the two teams have met on the field twice in Auburn, including last season when Vanderbilt swept both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to win the series. The Dores rolled to a 10-5 victory in the first game of the twin bill before surviving 7-6 in 10 innings in the nightcap to win the series. Vanderbilt has won five straight series against the Tigers dating back to 2010 and are 58-93-1 all-time vs. Auburn dating back to 1912.
DOUBLE DIP
The Commodores square off against Auburn in a doubleheader for the second time in two years. The two teams played a doubleheader to decide the series last year in Auburn on Saturday with the Dores sweeping the double dip to win the series. Today’s doubleheader is just the second this season for Vanderbilt. VU played two at Stanford on March 3, one day before the three-game series was scheduled to begin. The Commodores and Cardinal split the two games with Stanford handing the Dores their first loss of the year in the opener before Vandy earned the split with a 4-1 win in the second game.
THE WRIGHT STUFF
Kyle Wright has been named the SEC Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding, three-hit shutout at No. 1 Florida last Saturday. The sophomore matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts while walking just two and scattering three singles. Wright did not allow a base runner to reach second base in his seventh win of the year. Over his last three starts, the right-hander is 3-0 with 25 strikeouts in 23 innings. Wright has allowed three runs on 11 hits with just four walks during the stretch, including a current 16-inning scoreless streak. He joins Jordan Sheffield and Jeren Kendall as Commodores to earn weekly honors from the league this year.
CALIENTE INFANTE
Julian Infante enjoyed his first trip back to his home state of Florida over the weekend, going 5-for-12 (.417) with three runs scored and his fourth home run. The Miami-native has posted hits in four straight games going 6-for-16 (.375) with three runs and three RBI. He started his first career game at third base in Tuesday night’s win over Morehead State, driving in two runs with a single. His four home runs are already tied with fellow freshman Ethan Paul for third-most on the team.
THE SENIORS
Vanderbilt will honor two seniors this weekend with Tyler Campbell and Kyle Smith being recognized. The duo will go down as the two players with the most wins in Black & Gold history with Vanderbilt having won 194 games and counting since their arrival in 2013. Campbell will be honored during Thursday night’s game with Smith being honored on Saturday.
