Commodores travel to Virginia for Challenge

With the SEC Championships quickly approaching, the Vanderbilt track and field team travels to Charlottesville, Va., this weekend for the the Virginia Challenge, which will be the Commodores’ second-to-last meet of the regular season. Here’s a closer look at the meet:

l Update on the Commodores: Vanderbilt had its first open date of the outdoor season last weekend, which ended a stretch of three consecutive weekends of competition for the Commodores. In their most recent action two weeks ago at the Tiger Track Classic (hosted by Auburn), the Commodores produced more than a dozen Top-10 finishes. Jake Van Geffen set a new school record in the 3k, finishing with a time of 8:28.47 to take third place overall, and Katherine Delaney posted a career-best time of 2:07.84 in the 800 to earn a fourth-place finish and move up from seventh to fourth on Vanderbilt’s all-time list. l Looking at the field: This weekend’s meet is scheduled to feature full squads from 29 schools. Vanderbilt will be one of four SEC teams in action, along with Ole Miss, Kentucky and Georgia. Here’s a look at the entire field:

l Looking back to last year: Faith Washington helped lead the charge for the Commodores last year in Charlottesville by winning the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.64, which ranked as the No. 3 mark on Vanderbilt’s all-time list. Also, Katherine Delaney set a new personal best in the 1500 with a time of 4:25.47, which ranked No. 9 on VU’s all-time list, and Rebecca Chandler broke her own school record by more than two seconds in the Steeplechase with a time of 10:21.20.
