Commodores head to Auburn for Tiger Track Classic

The Vanderbilt track and field team heads to Auburn, Ala., this weekend to compete in the Tiger Track Classic. Here’s a closer look at the meet:

l Update on the Commodores:
Vanderbilt is off to a strong start to the outdoor season, producing an impressive performance at the Black-and-Gold Invitational two weeks ago and then enjoying strong results at three separate meets last weekend. At the Stanford Invitational, Katherine Delaney recorded a time of 4:18.24 in the 1500 to post a six-second personal best and set the No. 2 mark on Vanderbilt’s all-time list, and Vanessa Valentine crushed her previous best by 15 seconds in the 5k with a time of 16:10.52, which ranks No. 3 on VU’s list. At the Florida Relays, Jennifer Edobi posted a personal-best time of 53.33 in the 400 meters to set the No. 2 mark on VU’s all-time list. Edobi was also a member of Vanderbilt’s 4×400 relay that set a season’s best time of 3:39.84 in the prelims and to set the No. 7 mark on VU’s all-time list.

l Looking at the field: Vanderbilt will be one of 20 schools competing at this weekend’s meet. The list includes three SEC teams — Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and host Auburn — along with a pair of ACC teams, Clemson and Georgia Tech. The full field includes: Alabama State (m/w), Auburn (m/w), Boston University (m/w), Cincinnati (m/w), Clemson (m/w), Columbus State (m/w), Georgia State (m/w), Georgia Tech (m/w), Indiana (m/w), Louisiana-Lafayette (m/w), Memphis (m/w), Michigan (m), Middle Tennessee (m/w), Ole Miss (m/w), South Alabama (m/w), Southern Illinois (m/w), Southern Miss (m/w), Troy (m/w), Vanderbilt (w) and Western Carolina (m/w).

l Looking back to last year: At last year’s Tiger Track Classic, All-American Simone Charley won the triple jump by posting a mark of 41-11.75, and Tierney Price set a huge PR with a mark of 40-7.50 to take sixth. Also, Faith Washington finished second in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.74, which ranked No. 3 on VU’s all-time list, and Skyler Carpenter took fourth at 59.55. Megan McCabe and Katie Watts McCabe each set new PRs in the pole vault, with McCabe clearing 11-07.75 to finish in a tie for ninth and Watts clearing 11-01.75 to finish tied for 13th. Those two marks ranked No. 7 and No. 10, respectively, on VU’s all-time list.
