NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend, continuing SEC play in the Magnolia state. VU takes on No. 28 Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. on Friday, April 1st, and then in Oxford on Saturday against the No. 36 Ole Miss Rebels.
The Commodores (12-4) come off a very successful weekend at home, having swept in-state rival Tennessee, 7-0, and defeated the then-third ranked Georgia Bulldogs, 4-3.
Wednesday morning, the SEC announced that senior Frances Altick was this week’s SEC Player of the Week. The honor comes after going 4-0 in singles and doubles last weekend, and accumulating an outstanding 12-0 (7-0) individual record. The senior sits just one victory away from her 100th Commodore singles win.
In this week’s Oracle/ITA team rankings, Vandy held its spot at No. 5 in the nation. Three Commodores are ranked individually with Altick leading the way at No. 17, Astra Sharma (No. 21) and Sydney Campbell (No. 25) follow. In tandems, Courtney Colton and Sharma come in at No. 33, with Colton and Campbell in at No. 10.
Last season the then 13th-ranked Commodores kicked off the 2014-15-conference portion of their schedule rebounding back from a doubles loss to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-3. In their last meeting against Ole Miss, Vanderbilt dominated the Rebels, 6-1, at home.
