l Update on the Commodores: With Carmen Carlos and Jake Van Geffen delivering record-breaking performances, the Commodores opened their outdoor season in strong style last weekend. Hosting the annual Black and Gold Invitational — which is Vanderbilt’s only home meet of the season — the Commodores delivered a series of impressive performances throughout the weekend. Carlos ran to a victory in the 3k with a personal-best time of 9:28.97 to break a school record that had been in place for more than 20 years. (The previous mark was set by Beth Tallent in 1994 with a time of 9:29.10). Van Geffen finished second in the 5k with a school-record time of 14:45.88. The Commodores also had a pair of impressive performances in the 400, with Skyler Carpenter taking second with a time of 55.15 and Faith Washington finishing third at 55.32. Carpenter and Washington each set new PRs while posting the No. 5 and No. 6 marks, respectively, on VU’s all-time list. Senior Vanessa Valentine took third in the 3k with a personal-best time of 9:36.30, which ranks No. 3 on VU’s all-time list.

l Looking back to last year:
At last year’s Stanford Invitational, Vanessa Valentine set a PR in the 5k with a time of 16:48, and Sara Barron led a strong contingent of Commodores in the 1500 with a time of 4:23.7. Six of Barron’s teammates set new personal bests in the event — Katherine Delaney (4:26), Reagan Anderson (4:27), Carlos Carmen (4:29), Courtney Kriegshauser (4:35), Maddie Criscione (4:38) and Megan Huebner (4:43).
