Nashville, Tenn. – Jordan Sheffield has earned Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors from the league sharing the honor with Florida’s Alex Faedo.
Sheffiled was outstanding in his third win of the year, dominating Xavier on Friday night at Hawkins Field. The right-hander turned in a career-best 7.2 innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts while carrying a no hitter into the eighth inning. Sheffield retired the first 17 batters of the game before a two-out walk in the sixth snapped the string. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native finally gave up a hit in the eighth inning after battling Xavier’s Andre Jernigan to a full count before Jernigan lined a single into left field to break up the bid.
Sheffield’s 12-strikeout performance is his second double-digit strikeout game in his first four starts of the year and marks the second time this season he has pitched at least seven innings. He joins teammate Jeren Kendall as Commodores to earn weekly honors from the SEC this season.
Vanderbilt hosts Northern Illinois tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. at Hawkins Field on SEC Network+.
