NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team welcomes a formidable opponent March 12, as the 9th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions head to West End this weekend. Saturday’s matchup is slated to take place at 11:30 am CT at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.
The Commodores (4-2) come of a successful spring break trip out west, where the squad went 1-1. VU owns a 2-1 record at home and, 0-2 against ranked teams. Vandy most recently defeated the Denver Pioneers in the Mile-High City, 12-7.
On the attack against Denver, Vanderbilt did a phenomenal job forming a multi-person attack as six Commodores’ Mallory Schonk leading the squad with four goals on five shots on goal. VU hopes spread the wealth against this Saturday, as the offense goes head to head against a strong Penn State back line.
Defensively, Vandy goalie Callahan Kent has had a great season thus far, with 65 saves in six games.
No. 9 Penn State owns a 5-1 slate, with its lone loss come from then-7th ranked UVA; 16-13. The Nittany Lions are boasting a .75 shots on goal percentage, and averaging a little over 14 goals per game.
Offensively, PSU is led by senior Madison Cyr who heads into Saturday’s matchup with 19 goals and six assists to her name. Cyr will be a test to the ‘Dores, however VU’s defense successfully shut down Denver’s leading scorer just last weekend.
In their last meeting, the Commodores left University Park, Pa. with a 17-10 loss.
