Schwab named to Hogan Award Watch List

Feb. 10, 2016

Junior Matthias Schwab was named as one of 25 collegiate golfers to the 2016 Ben Hogan Award watch list, according to a joint announcement made by Colonial Country Club, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

The most prestigious award in men’s college golf, The Ben Hogan Award presented by Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. (Konica Minolta) is issued annually to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the past 12-month period. The Ben Hogan Award Selection Committee, which votes during each stage of the process, is comprised of leaders in professional, amateur and collegiate golf.

Schwab, who recently finished in a tie fourth at the prestigious Jones Cup, was the team’s leading scorer in the fall, averaging 71.08 strokes in 12 rounds while carding an individual title at the Carmel Cup and an eighth-place finish at the DICK’s Sporting Goods Challenge.

The junior from Rohrmoos, Austria, is the fourth Commodore to make a Hogan Award Watch List, joining Hunter Stewart, Luke List, and Brandt Snedeker.

Jones Cup
Schwab was not the only Vanderbilt golfer who competed at the Jones Cup, which took place at the Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga., Feb. 5-7.

Sophomore Theo Humphrey finished in a tie for 25th (+13, 77-73-79), Senior Carson Jacobs finished in a tie for 35th (+15, 76-79-76), freshman Will Gordon in a tie for 65th (+23, 78-81-80), while senior Zack Jaworski (+26, 81-82-79) and freshman Patrick Martin each finished in a tie for 74th (+26, 78-86-78).

Pebble Beach full of Commodores
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am will be full of Commodores this weekend, with two-time champion and 2015 champ Brandt Snedeker leading the way. Last year, Snedeker had just one bogey all week, breaking his own scoring record to capture the title for the second time in three years. Another Snedeker victory would not only make him the seventh to go back-to-back at Pebble Beach, but just the second to win three in four years. Mark O’Meara did it in 1989-90 and ’92 as part of his record five titles on the Monterey Peninsula.

Other Vanderbilt players in the field this week are current PGA Tour members Jon Curran and Luke List, and 2015 SEC Player of the Year Hunter Stewart.

Snedeker will tee off at 9:50 Pacific Time at Spyglass Hills and be paired with longtime amateur partner and Vanderbilt alum Toby Wilt. Other tee times for the Commodores include Jon Curran, who will tee off at 8:44 Pacific Time at Pebble Beach and be paired with Jeremy Jacobs, the owner of the Boston Bruins, Luke List, who will tee off at 9:28 at Pebble Beach and be paired with Steve Grimshaw, the CEO of Caliber Collision Centers, and Hunter Stewart, who will be paired with Kunal Nayyar, an actor (Raj) on the Big Bang Theory, at 10:12 a.m. at SpyGlass Hills.
