NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 1 Vanderbilt Commodores are National Team Indoors bound for the fourth straight year. The Dores head into the four-day tournament coming off the heels of the program’s first ever victory over the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal, 4-1.
Vanderbilt’s first match of the tournament will be against No. 14 Duke Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm CT.
“This is a return for the Commodores in Madison, Wisconsin, said head coach Geoff Macdoald.” “We went to the finals here in 2002, but we view this as a great opportunity to play top competition early in the year and our focus is on improving and growing as a team. It’s early, it’s early in February and NCAAs are in May. This is all about building towards May.”
Sixteen of the top Division I women’s teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament by winning their respected ITA Kickoff site. Vanderbilt swept both Denver and Brown to earn their place.
“I’ve really been impressed with this team. Everyone is coming outa and doing extra individual work, which is great, that’s all you can ask… that they put forth really good effort.”
Vanderbilt has been named the No. 1 see of the tournament, in a field that consists of 14 teams in the Oracle/ITA top 20. The SEC leads National Indoors with five teams in attendance; VU (1), UGA (2), Texas A&M (9), Alabama (13) and LSU (18).
Each team is guaranteed three matches at the event. Top eight seeds in the #ITAIndoors field were determined based off of an unpublished ranking conducted by the National Ranking Committee earlier in the week.
The remaining eight teams were placed into draw by random selection. Teams were moved to avoid playing opponents in the first round already on their respective regular-season schedules.
Duke heads into National Indoors with a 4-0 record and wins over Elon, No. 67 Portland, No. 29 Mississippi State and No. 26 Northwestern.
“They have the top recruiting class in the country… their freshmen class is superb. They’re a great team, and won this tournament a few years ago. It’s a great first round for us, everyone is good and you come here to play top teams. Duke is certainly a top team; I’d say it’s the best first round match in the tournament. Rankings at this stage aren’t precise or accurate so we have a ton of respect for them and we think it’s going to be a whale of a match.”
