Jan. 20, 2016

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Tulsa Director of Athletics Derrick Gragg, a former Vanderbilt wide receiver, has been invited to speak on our campus Feb. 26 on his recent book, “40 Days of Direction: Life Lessons from the Talented Ten.” The talented ten are Gragg’s teammates back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Gragg and his Vandy buddies will be spotlighted at the next day’s Kentucky basketball game.

Henry Hecht, the former Hustler sportswriter during the Perry Wallace era of the late 1960’s, was back last weekend and attended the Alabama basketball game last Saturday. Hecht went on to a career in sports writing, covering professional sports for the New York Post, New York Times, Sports Illustrated among other national outlets.

Athletic Director David Williams was one of four keynote speakers Jan. 7 at the Black Student Athlete Summit hosted by the University of Texas.
