NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the spring season only days away for the Vanderbilt tennis teams, the Southeastern Conference announced the tennis coaches’ preseason poll, Wednesday.
The 2016 Commodore squads are predicted to place second in the league for women and eighth in men.
In women’s tennis the reigning SEC and NCAA Champion Commodores closely follow the Florida Gators in the Coaches’ predictions. Florida went 24-4 with a conference record of 12-1 and the SEC regular season title. The Gators are currently ranked No. 3 in the county, behind Vanderbilt at No. 1 and Southern Cal at No. 2.
The 25th ranked men’s tennis team is predicted to finish eighth in the conference, with the sixth-eighth places determined by only a margin of a point or two. The Georgia Bulldogs were picked as the overall SEC champion. Last season, the Bulldogs went 24-5, 11-1 in the SEC.
This weekend Vanderbilt hits the court for the first time since November, as Ian Duvenhage and the men’s tennis team open up their season at home, with a doubleheader against Furman and Lipscomb beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 16th. The women head to Coral Gables, Fla. for the Hurricanes’ Miami Invitational, which lasts the 15th-17th.
