Academic award creates little buzz

Dec. 11, 2015

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Happy Birthday to Viola (Vi) Guepe, widow Art Guepe, who was our head football coach from 1953-1962. Vi has a memorable birthday: December 13, 1912. 12-13-12. You can do the math.

The other day the American Football Coaches Association announced its 2015 Academic Achievement Award and Vanderbilt shared the honor with Duke, both with perfect graduation success rates. It is the fourth time the Commodores have won or shared the award and only three programs (Notre Dame, Northwestern and Duke) have won more. It’s quite a long-term achievement but seemingly draws scant public interest and no traction in the media – the local paper gave it three tiny paragraphs on page 5 as the second item in its digest section. Had a student-athlete been cited for DUI it would have been on the front page.

David Williams is a member of an advisory board assisting Nashville’s mayor and school board in its search for the Director of Metro Schools. Locating a top-notch director is a difficult assignment when one considers all the moving parts.

A call was put out to Nashville’s golf community for volunteers to help at the NCAA Golf Regional Vanderbilt is hosting at Vanderbilt Legends Club May 16-18 and the response was terrific. The weekend golfers should consider coming out to enjoy the tremendous skill level of the top collegians, some are on the cusp on the PGA Tour.
