With hopes of extending of a tournament winning streak that started when many of the current Vanderbilt players were still in diapers, the Commodores are set to host the 15th edition of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Vanderbilt owns a 28-0 all-time record in the tournament, and has captured the championship 14 times. This year, the Commodores will welcome Austin Peay, Ohio University and Indiana to Nashville for the two-day event. Austin Peay will be participating in the event for the second time after also doing so in 2009, while the other two visiting teams will be first-time participants. Here’s a look at the tournament’s schedule and details, along with the skinny on the participating teams.
l Rich history: The Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament was first played in 1999 and was held each year through the 2011-12 season. Over the past four seasons, the tournament has switched to a bi-annual format, which enables the Commodores to travel to different tournaments every other year during the Thanksgiving holidays. (Vanderbilt participated in the San Juan Shootout in 2012 and competed in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla., last season).
l Vanderbilt versus the field:
VU vs. Austin Peay: Vanderbilt owns a 14-1 all-time record against Austin Peay, having won the past 14 meetings after losing the first-ever matchup to the Governors in 1977-78. The teams most recent matchup was during the 2012-13 season, when VU rolled to a 67-36 victory in Nashville.
VU vs. Indiana: Vanderbilt and Indiana are tied 1-1 in the all-time series, with VU posting a 74-54 win in Nashville in the 1999-2000 season, and the Hoosiers winning 84-61 the previous season in Bloomington.
VU vs. Ohio University: If Vanderbilt faces Ohio in the tournament, it will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.
l Scouting the Commodores Vanderbilt has had mixed results in the first three weeks of the season, posting a pair of convincing home wins (over Mississippi Valley State and Presbyterian) and suffering two road losses (at Green Bay and Dayton). …. Vanderbilt’s most recent game was a 56-38 victory over Presbyterian on Monday. VU closed the game on a 12-0 run over the final five minutes to pull away from the stubborn Presbyterian team. … The Commodores have shined defensively in each of the home victories, limiting both opponents to less than 39 points. … Senior guard Jasmine Jenkins leads Vanderbilt in scoring at 15.3 points per game, and has reached double figures in each of VU’s first four games. She also ranks second on the team in rebounding (4.3 per game) and assists (3.2) … Rayte’a Long is the Commodores’ top rebounder by a wide margin at 6.5 boards per game. The senior post player — who is putting up the impressive numbers while seeing only about 17 minutes of action per game — matched her career high with nine rebounds in the win over Presbyterian.
l Scouting Austin Peay: The Governors will bring a three-game losing streak into the tournament, with all three losses coming on the road — to Ball State, Wright State and Miami — in the span of just four days (from Nov. 19-23). … Austin Peay opened the season with a three-game homestand, which began with a 67-58 loss to California, followed by convincing wins over Christian Brothers and Trevecca Nazarene. …. Austin Peay has two players averaging double figures in scoring, with Tiasha Gray averring 17.5 per game and Tearra Banks averaging 13.2. … The Governors’ top rebounder is Beth Rates, who is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. … Gray is averaging a team-high 5.1 assists per game.
l Scouting Indiana: The Hoosiers have jumped out to a 3-1 start, highlighted by a 54-43 home win over No. 19-ranked Chattanooga on Nov. 17. Indiana has also defeated Tennessee State at home and earned a road win over IPFW. The Hoosiers’ lone loss was an 84-69 setback at DePaul on Nov. 19. … Indiana has been impressive on the offensive end, averaging 72.5 points per game and shooting 50.7 percent from the floor as a team. … Indiana has three players averaging in double figures: Tyra Buss leads the way at 19.0 points per game, Amanda Cahill is averaging 13.5 ppg and Alexis Gassion is averaging 12.5. … Cahill and Gassion also rank first and second on the team in rebounding at 8.0 and 7.0 rpg, respectively. … The Hoosiers have averaged just 11 three-point attempts per game, the lowest among the four teams in the Thanksgiving Tournament.
l Scouting Ohio University: The Bobcats have won their past two games — beating Florida Gulf Coast and Winthrop — after losing their season-opener to Illinois on the road. … The Bobcats have a relentless permitter attack, as they average 35 three-point attempts per game. They are shooting 31.8 percent from long range, and all 12 players on their roster have attempted at least one 3-pointer this season. As a team, Ohio has attempted 107 three-pointers in its three games, while their opponents have attempted only 44. … Ohio’s top scorer is Kiyanna Black, who is averaging 18.0 points per game and is 11-of-35 (31 percent) from 3-point range. Lexie Baldwin is also averaging double figures at 10.7 ppg. … Jasmine Weatherspoon is the team’s top rebounder at 9.0 boards per game.
