Saturday’s exhibition game will introduce fans to new WBB rules

Nov. 4, 2015

When the Vanderbilt women’s team hosts Clayton State on Saturday at 3 p.m. in an exhibition game at Memorial Gym, it will not only give Commodore supporters their first look at this year’s team, it will also give the fans their first look at numerous rule changes that have been implemented in women’s basketball for the 2015-16 season.

Among the biggest is the switch to a four-quarter format. In previous years, each game has been divided into two, 20-minute halves. This season, four 10-minute quarters will be played.

Other key rule changes involve the bonus situation (which will begin with the fifth team foul of each quarter and will result in an automatic two-shot foul) and a rule that involves giving teams a choice to advance the ball to the front court in the final minute of play.

The new rules will require some adjusting — for players, coaches and fans — but they have the potential to provide even more excitement to the women’s game.
